Realize your dream of owning an historic gem in beautiful Carrollton, MS, magnificent Stanhope, ca 1847, a richly accented Italianate villa listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy the peaceful grounds overlooking the historic courthouse and city square in the heart of town. Stanhope, with its gorgeous brick surround gunite swimming pool and cabana, will make a great single home or a fabulous bed and breakfast. Stanhope is considered to be one of the most impressive homes in Carrollton with its Italianate detail consisting of hooded windows and decorative brackets, a hipped roof tower, classic double entry door with its elliptical fanlight and sidelights, and a balcony over the center bay. Its many unique features include magical grounds, heart pine floors, 14 ft ceilings, an original stain glass window, rich crown molding, a claw foot tub, outdoor speakers, and new privacy fencing around pool. The original cast iron railings for the balcony have been reclaimed and will convey. Included in the list price are several pieces of art and various furnishings, a custom made kitchen island, an exquisite 12 foot mirror from France, custom draperies, and outdoor furnishings. An exuberantly detailed Italianate house of wood-frame construction is listed as a contributing element of the Carrollton Historic District, listed on the National Register, designated a Mississippi Landmark, and is included in ''Victorian Houses of Mississippi'' (2005) (p. 33) and ''Buildings of Mississippi'' (2020) (p.96, YB49). Stanhope House is one of several buildings in Carroll County designed by architect and master builder James Clark Harris, who designed and built the Carroll County Courthouse and the Captain Ray House, both in Carrollton, and Greenwood Leflore's residence, Malmaison (and he married Leflore's daughter). The original structure of Stanhope House was built in 1847 in the Italianate style; it included mainly the front half of the house. The kitchen was contained in a separate structure in the rear portion of the property to reduce the risk of fire in the main house. The first owner was a family doctor, Dr. Washington Middleton Stansbury. He and his family lived on the ground floor of the house, and his patients were shown upstairs to his medical office when they arrived to see the doctor. The foyer stairs will still take you up to this room which has been used as a bedroom. The house was expanded in 1874 when the separate kitchen building was moved forward and joined to the front portion and plumbing was updated. According to a 2016 document called ''History of Manassas Mill'' by Kenny Downs, Dr. Stansbury's family owned the house until 1890. Carrollton is rich with history; in fact, the Carrollton Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, and Stanhope House was listed as a contributing element of the district. Additionally, Stanhope House was designated a Mississippi Landmark in 2004 by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. And each year in the fall, the town honors its past with the Carrollton Pilgrimage and Pioneer Day Festival, which includes tours of historic homes and buildings, traditional food and music, cultural traditions and local guides in elaborate period costumes. This exceptional property offers livability and a timeless sense of serenity. We invite you to continue this legacy by becoming the next steward of this amazing property. Perfect for your private dream home, venue business, bed and breakfast or combination.
